Lesson 2.2a: Photo Exercise #2: Lighting and Composition

This assignment must be completed before our next class meeting.

1. Working with your parter from class you will take two photographs using the same techniques discussed in class for lighting. One picture will be using the "Monster Lighting" method and the other picture will be using light coming from top. For the second picture you can use incandescent light or natural light. For the "Monster Lighting" picture you will have to use your imagination. When you have taken your two photographs make sure you email them to me the day before your class session, so 7th grade will submit no later than Sunday and 8th grade no later than Monday. You have plenty of time to get these photographs to me so find a way to email them. Use this EMAIL link to do so (worth=15 pts).

2. Next you will take 3 more photgraphs using one of the basic elements of Composition from section A and B. If you need more information refer back to the Keynote presentation used in class. For this assignment you can work on your own or with your partner. Your subject is whatever you want it to be. If you did not see the presentation used in class, use this link to see the KEYNOTE presentation on Composition for more information. Below are some guidelines for your picture. Each picture should combine one element from section A and one from section B. (each picture is worth = 10 pts)

A. Your picture should use of these two elements:

      • Extreme Close-Up
      • Wide Shot

B. Remember that you should keep in mind what is your Point of Interest and to just keep it Simple (Simplicity). Also don't forget to ask yourself the following question: "What message do I want my picture to deliver?" Make sure your picture uses one of the elements below:

    • Contrast
    • Balance
    • Framing
    • View Point
    • Direction of Movement
    • Diagonals

Make sure that you email these photographs separate from the ones in section 1. The email you send me from section 1 will be titled, "Lighting". The three pictures from section 2 will be titled "Composition". For the Composition make sure that you tell me what elements you are using and a brief description of the picture.

Week 9: Mar. 3 - 7 (Due: Mar. 10 & 11)

Lesson 2.1a: Photo Exercise #1: Camera Angle

This assignment must be completed before our next class meeting.

1. Keeping in mind that Camera Angles influence our perception of the subject being photographed you are going to retrieve some examples and reflect about them. Find one example of the three camera angles discussed in class, High Angle Shot, Low Angle Shot, and Eye Level Shot. You can use examples from magazines, newspapers, movies, etc to illustrate that and place them on the Tree Map you had begun this past week. Below each example on your Tree Map I would like for you to reflect how that specific photograph influences YOUR perception. Wrte a short reflection on your Tree Map with how you perceive the photo (worth=15 pts).

2. Keeping in mind that Lighting is one of the Three Building Blocks for Visual Language. Find one image or picture from any source and create a Circle Map with the image in the center. Around the center of the Circle Map use some words that describe how the picture makes you feel. What are some of the perceptions you have of that picutre. Use some words that describe how you think the picture was taken. What are some immediate things you see. Make sure that you create this Circle Map using construction paper (worth=15 pts).

3. Find one picture that you think reflects the third Building Block for Visual Language, which is Composition. Bring that picture to class and be prepared to discuss your justification. You will need the picture for the class activity, so make sure that you bring the picture or else you will not be able to participate and your group will lose points.

Week 8: Feb. 25 - 29 (Due: Mar. 3 & 4)

Lesson 2a: Basic Visual Language 1:Three Building Blocks

This assignment must be completed before our next class meeting.

1. Define the word "FORMAT". Use a dictionary to obtain the correct meaning of this Keyword for this new unit (worth=5 pts). The first 10 students to get this to me will receive 10 pts.

2. Complete the Circle Map for the question "Places where visual images might be found?" Make sure that you complete this Circle Map on a piece of white construction paper (9x12). DO NOT USE lined paper!! (worth = 15 pts).

3. If you have a digital camera bring it to our next class meeting. DO NOT go out and buy a new camera! Do not bring instant cameras, such as Polaroids or disposable cameras. If you bring a digital camera bring the cables provided to download your images. If you have a camcorder that takes photos you may bring that to class. Make sure that you only bring this camera the day of our class and not on any other day. If you would like to ensure your camera is safe you may bring it to my office and leave it there until our class session.

4. Create a Tree Map that would include the Three Basic Building Blocks of visual Language. At the top of your Tree Map you should have the title "Three Basic Building Blocks" and below the three different blocks. Below that you should state what they are and show examples of them in your Tree Map. This map may be incorrect, but the goal is to determine what the correct answer is going to be. If you guess correctly then you will have less homework for the following week (worth = 15 pts).
